Breakfast For Learning Program Info
Aboriginal Nutrition Advisory Committee in Partnership with the Canadian Living Foundation

More than one million Canadian children don't get the nourishment they need. Research shows that there is a clear link between good nutrition and school performance. Kids who don’t get enough to eat are tired, have a short attention span and can’t solve problems as well as classmates who eat nutritious meals.

What is Canadian Living Foundation

BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING, Canadian Living Foundation is the only national non-profit organization which is solely dedicated to supporting child nutrition programs in Canada. We rely upon a volunteer board of directors, a small staff and thousands of volunteers to carry out our work. BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING does not own or operate any of the programs we support. All the programs are created and sustained by a network of dedicated volunteers, many of them parents of children participating in the nutrition programs.

BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING supports breakfast, lunch and snack programs in different ways. We coordinate several programs including the Nutrition Grants Program and the Community Partners Program. We also participate in special events and projects aimed at improving the lives of children. Information about all the programs, events and projects we support can be on our web site.

Nutrition Program Grants

BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING'S Nutrition Grants Program provides funds directly to communities who want to start or improve the quality of a nutrition program. Grants are provided to partially fund food, equipment or staffing. Funding assistance is based on the following criteria being met:

Nutritious and safe food Non-stigmatizing and universally accessible programs Programs that complement but do not replace welfare reform Community-based programs reflecting the individuality of the community and its unique needs Cultural appropriateness, sensitive to and respectful of individual and community diversity Parental and family involvement, recognizing that child nutrition is a family responsibility A nurturing, caring environment in which children and volunteers can interact An environment conducive to learning about healthy eating habits for lifelong healthy development Self-sustaining programs with community and family ownership to ensure financial stability. The full grant guidelines and grant deadlines are available online.

Nutrition program grants support community action on child hunger by assisting in the development of breakfast, lunch and snack programs in schools and communities. The Canadian Living Foundation provides funding directly to communities that want to start or expand child nutrition programs.

With our nutrition program grants and our nutrition education resources we can help your community to develop and sustain breakfast, lunch and snack programs. In Ontario, we also provide vouchers to help your school-based programs purchase nutritious food.

Note: That the Aboriginal Nutrition Advisory Committee will be sending a package to each community in the Sioux Lookout District. If your community did not receive a package then contact a representative from the Advisory Committee Board. For more information visit the member list page.

Northern Facts
Our way of life does effect our nutrition. In the past we would only eat when we where hungry This creates a problem with our children because of this our children inherit this habit. So when our kids don't feel hungry in the morning they take off to school without breakfast. We begin to show them that it is important to have a good breakfast. A good breakfast is beneficial for our mind and body. How important is this for ourselves and not just our kids. Healthy eating habits will be the key in assisting our children become more healthy and active while in school.
